Language is a necessary tool to survive and function in this world, even for those who are unable to speak at all. Early vocabulary skills are essential to success while in school and afterwards. Parents play a major role in providing language skills. It has been said that children’s knowledge of vocabulary in early childhood depends exclusively on parents. Often, the skills of language, of a child are associated with parent’s education and income. This article expounds the study of how parent’s income or level of education are associated with the child’s vocabulary. It explains whether frequent or quality reading as well as child’s interest in reading has any significant impacts on the child’s language. The vocabulary skills of a child are also associated with how often parents read books to them as well as the quality of reading. It is important for both father and mother to read to their children every day as this will not only help children to build their vocabulary, but it will also give the ability to memories and fast learning skills. In addition to the frequent reading, the quality of reading, which is included but not limited to talk about the text. If someone is just reading the book word by word but does not ask questions or talk extra about the text, it isn’t sufficient enough for children to do better in vocabulary. Thus both, the quality and frequent reading are far reaching aspects for the growth of vocabulary among children. In this study of longitudinal contributions to children’s vocabulary, 26 Latino and 35 African American parents and their toddlers were selected mainly based on their low-income. Out of 61 families only 19% speak Spanish at home. The starting age of toddlers was 24 months. They were given on e bag of books and two bags with toys and asked to engage their children for ten minutes with each bag. This study was measured by how often parents read to their children.
